Architecture Department of the University of Asia Pacific designs The Liberation War Memorial in Barishal

 

The Department of Architecture of the University of Asia Pacific has recently completed a project on 'The Liberation War Memorial in Barishal’. The memorial was set up to conserve the Torture Camp, Bunker, Killing-field and Surrounding Area' in the town.

On 8 December 2020, the memorial was inaugurated by Mr. Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah, Mayor, Barishal City Corporation to commemorate the day Barishal was liberated in 1971. The project was built by Barishal City Corporation in association with Liberation War Museum, Bangladesh.

This memorial has a great significance for the people of Barishal, as it bears the testimony of Pakistan Army’s brutality during the Liberation War in 1971. The Pakistani army had created bunkers, torture-cells and mass killing ground as well as a mini-cantonment there. The occupation army and its leading associates had left the area on December 8, 1971. The spot was freed after the rest of the associates had surrendered before the freedom fighters on December 18, 1971.

The name of UAP has been engraved in both the inaugural plaque and the descriptive plaque of the memorial alter, which will add to the reputation of UAP. The memorial testifies the high standard of academic excellence of the Architecture Department of UAP.
